Zotefoams Launches Mono-Material Barrier Packaging Technology

Zotefoams rolled out ReZorce, diverse HDPE mono-materials that are recyclable and with barrier properties achieving or surpassing all the food industry standards. Reportedly, these materials will work as a substitute for the composite packaging. Due to ReZorce’s multi-layered structure, the cast-off substances can be easily incorporated in it.

While converters and brand owners can now apply for the ReZorce’s licensing, it can be used for the packaging of diverse beverages and foodstuffs, which need moisture and/or oxygen-proof packaging. The present versions of laminated paper, crisp (potato chip) packets, cartons, and pouches are difficult to recycle as they contain a mixture of aluminum, metalized foils, plastic, and paper. The trials of the recently launched technology have shown outstanding functional abilities to replace these wrapping alternatives. Moreover, it shows compatibility with HDPE post-consumer recycling stream no. 2 and float-sink sorting.

While the surface of these packaging shows compatibility with all regularly used printing techniques, its foamed layers demonstrate similar fold characteristics and feel as that of a paper. While the use of recycled HDPE is done in the product’s middle layers, a thin layer of FDA-approved material is employed on its internal surface to guarantee the safety of food packed.

On a similar note, GRPS (Grand Rapids Public Schools) and Kent County recently received a grant of over $450,000. This grant will be utilized to redirect more of the county’s trash away from landfills. As a part of a statewide “Know It Before You Throw It” recycling project, the announcement of two grants was done by the EGLE (Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy).

Jack Schinderle, EGLE’s Director of Materials Management, stated, “Boosting recycling and advancing the quality of substances we are recycling is not only the correct thing to do for our environment, but it is also helpful in minimizing water use, saving energy, conserving resources, reducing greenhouse gases, and opening opportunities for the regional employment.”
